Abandoned 40 years ago Sunny Acres was built in the late 1920s and opened in 1931. It was used as an orphanage during the great depression, a juvenile detention center in the 60s and rumor has it that it was also used as a hospital for kids with tuberculosis and an institution for the criminally insane. Some say it is haunted. It's been referred to as "Hell's Acres" by historians who say children were jammed into dungeon like cells. All in all, it was quite an experience exploring the deteriorating building, having to walk carefully with each step and hugging the walls on any remaining floor boards which have mostly burned away in more than one fire, or have rotted out. In order to shoot in the building, I had to sign a waiver giving up all my rights if I got hurt, had to wear a breathing mask, (asbestos and other icky things!), heavy shoes and hard hat with a light, and yes, it was worth every minute! I'm always looking for this kind of experience!
All photographs are available for purchase as prints, enlargements or gift items such as Tiles, Magnets, Greeting Cards, Puzzles, Coasters, Playing Cards, Mugs, Key Chains or Framed , Canvases and more.
